On Latina Equal Pay Day, NewsGuild members demand fairness

Nov. 22, 2019 – Members of The NewsGuild-CWA called out the nation’s media executives and other “masters of the universe” on Nov. 20, demanding equal pay for Latinas and other women and people of color. Designated Latina Equal Pay Day, the date symbolizes the fact that, on average, Latinas must work 11 months into 2019 to catch up to what white men earned by the end of 2018. July 3, 2019 – It happened more than 50 years ago, but Peggy Simpson remembers the details clearly.

After the excitement of the early days of the trial of Jack Ruby, covered by male reporters, she had handled the daily grind. She would work the overnight shift at the Dallas bureau of The Associated Press, go home to shower and head to the courtroom. But on the day the case of the man accused of killing President Kennedy’s assassin went to the jury, she arrived to find another reporter in her seat – a man. Philadelphia NewsGuild touts ‘significant progress’ in reducing gender pay gap; still far to go in newsroom diversity

March 19, 2019 – The NewsGuild of Greater Philadelphia reports the local has made significant progress in closing a gender-based pay gap at the city’s three major publications over the last three years and says union members are determined to eliminate the gap entirely. The local is also committed to closing a race-based pay gap and increasing diversity in the newsroom.
