Full-time faculty at Point Park University ratifies new contract

In a unanimous 72-0 vote, full-time faculty at Point Park University ratified a new three-year collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on Nov. 10. They are part of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh Local 38061.

Key provisions of the three-year agreement include annual salary increases of 3.5%-4.25% percent; increases in the minimum salaries for all full-time faculty positions, with lecturers’ minimum salaries increasing by 12-15% this academic year, and four weeks of parental leave with 100% pay, with parents who give birth continuing to be eligible for short-term disability beyond four weeks if they are unable to work. Pay increases will be retroactive to the start of the fall semester.

Politico, E&E staffers win union recognition

The staffers of POLITICO and E&E News won voluntary recognition of their union, PEN Guild, on Tuesday, 10 days after they announced they were unionizing. They praised “the good faith negotiations” that led to the agreement and said they “look forward to continuing that spirit in contract talks.”

Staffers at Wirecutter are planning a walkout during Black Friday week if the company continues to slow-walk bargaining. The New York Times Co., which owns the product review site, has failed to provide necessary information to negotiate wages. At the same time, the Times is rolling in money: Wirecutter has added 10,000 paid subscribers and the company is sitting on about $1 billion in cash. The company sends union-busting attorneys to the table and has offered guaranteed annual raises of just 0.5%.

Local Journalism Sustainability Act would protect struggling news outlets

The NewsGuild-CWA enthusiastically supports a bill that would provide a path to financial stability for struggling local newspapers, digital-only publications and local television and radio stations through a series of tax credits.

“The Local Journalism Sustainability Act would provide a much-needed boost to save local news jobs,” said NewsGuild President Jon Schleuss. “Half of America’s journalism jobs have been wiped out in the past decade and the losses have accelerated during the pandemic.

Staff of Politico, E&E News are unionizing

Workers say they are uniting “in the spirit of love for journalism, respect for our colleagues and hope for this company’s future.”

The staff of Politico and E&E News announced Friday that they are unionizing as part of The NewsGuild-CWA.

“The award-winning newsroom staff of POLITICO and E&E News took a major step Friday toward giving a voice in the workplace to more than 250 journalists who dedicate each day to informing Americans on the inner workings of their democratic system,” they said in a press release.

The newest Gannett Guild: ‘It’s time to return local journalism to the people’

Journalists at three Gannett-owned publications in central New Jersey voted to be represented by The NewsGuild of New York Local 31003 in a vote supervised by the National Labor Relations Board that concluded on Thursday.

Staffers at the Asbury Park Press, Courier News, and Home News Tribune said they voted to form the APP-MCJ Guild to save local journalism from corporate owners. “It’s time to return local journalism to the people,” they said.
