The newest Gannett Guild: ‘It’s time to return local journalism to the people’

Journalists at three Gannett-owned publications in central New Jersey voted to be represented by The NewsGuild of New York Local 31003 in a vote supervised by the National Labor Relations Board that concluded on Thursday.

Staffers at the Asbury Park Press, Courier News, and Home News Tribune said they voted to form the APP-MCJ Guild to save local journalism from corporate owners. “It’s time to return local journalism to the people,” they said.

Point Park faculty, supporters rally for a fair contract

Full-time faculty at Point Park University took their case for a fair contract to the streets on Tuesday, rallying on campus and calling for the university’s cooperation in negotiating a fair contract. Approximately 130 full-time faculty at the school are members of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh Local 38061, along with about 110 staffers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

2021 Sector Conference adopted sweeping constitutional changes, looks to future

Most folks are not usually interested in a six-hour zoom call, but the 2021 NewsGuild-CWA Sector Conference was a lively affair, having been moved to a digital conference along with the CWA Convention, which began today.

New logo keeps a watchful eye on our democracies

During Saturday’s Sector Conference, I revealed the new logo design selected by the Executive Council to be our official logo going forward. 

The new logo is forward-looking while paying tribute to our proud history. Several features of the new image are adapted from logos the Guild used decades ago.

NewsGuild issues statement of support for IATSE

The NewsGuild-CWA Executive Council adopted the following statement of support for IATSE, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, on Oct. 15, 2021.

NewsGuild, press freedom groups call on officials to drop charges against journalist

The NewsGuild-CWA joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and other media organizations to call on the city of Medford, OR, to drop all charges against April Ehrlich, a reporter for Jefferson Public Radio.

Media invited to observe NewsGuild Sector Conference

Members of the media are invited to observe The NewsGuild-CWA Sector Conference, which will be held via Zoom, beginning at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 16. To apply for credentials, complete this form. A unique link will be emailed to credentialed journalists.

NewsGuild members who are not attending the conference as a delegate or alternate can attend as guests. Contact your local leadership to get registered.

San Francisco Chronicle developers vote union

Developers at the San Francisco Chronicle won their union election on Thursday to become part of the San Francisco Chronicle Guild and the Pacific Media Workers Guild Local 39521.

The developers won an important victory last month, when the National Labor Relations Board ruled that they had the right to join the existing San Francisco Guild unit.
