Training: Trauma Awareness and Self Care

Oct. 28, 2020 – The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, will deliver a 75-minute training on trauma awareness and self care at 7 p.m. ET on Nov. 9. The event is sponsored by the NewsGuild of New York and is open to all NewsGuild-CWA members. The training will be led by Bruce Shapiro, the Dart Center’s executive director, an investigative journalist and an expert on occupational health of journalists. Vote Count Gets Underway in Election of NewsGuild President

Updated 4:10 p.m. EDT

The ballot total has been revised to 2,227. Two pieces of mail retrieved from the post office box were not intended for the Guild.

May 13, 2019 – Members of the Sector Election and Referendum Committee (SERC) have begun processing ballots in the election of The NewsGuild-CWA president. Ballots were retrieved from the post office box in Washington, DC, on May 13 and transported to the MITAGS facility outside Baltimore, where the count is taking place. Activists to share lessons of union upsurge at NewsGuild conference Jan. 26

Jan. 25, 2019 – An upsurge in union organizing among journalists and other news industry employees will be the focus of a panel discussion and a question-and-answer session at The NewsGuild-CWA Sector Conference on Saturday, Jan. 26. NewsGuild seeks, receives assurance from DoubleTree Hotel that racist incident won’t be repeated

Jan. 10, 2019 – The NewsGuild-CWA has been assured that racist incidents such as the one that occurred at a DoubleTree Hotel in Oregon will not occur during the Guild’s sector conference in Florida.

The Guild’s Executive Committee wrote the manager of the DoubleTree in Orlando and to the president of Hilton Hotels, which owns DoubleTree, after an African-American guest at the hotel in Portland, OR, was ordered to leave. Calling on you to take action to protect journalists and a free press

Nov. 9, 2018 – A reporter suspended from White House press briefings because he asks tough questions. A journalist murdered in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey. Pipe bombs sent to more than a dozen targets, including journalists and other workers at CNN. As these aggressive acts against the press continue in the United States and abroad, the leader of the free world blames the media.
We at The NewsGuild-CWA – a union of media workers in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada – are horrified by the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a Saudi Arabian consulate and the pipe bombs sent to CNN. We also denounce the exclusion of CNN’s Jim Acosta from White House news conferences and the administration’s use of a doctored video to justify that decision.
