Journalists at The Columbian announce union organizing campaign

Sept. 30, 2019 – Journalists at The Columbian newspaper have announced plans to unionize as The Columbian Guild.

An overwhelming majority of reporters, photographers, copy editors, designers and editorial assistants have signed cards indicating their support for the effort. The Columbian Guild will join the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild – Local 37082 of The NewsGuild, a sector of the Communications Workers of America. Job Opening at NewsGuild: Organizing Campaign Lead

Sept. 23, 2019 – Media employees at print and digital publications around the country are organizing in record numbers. Journalists at outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, New Yorker, and BuzzFeed are among the more than 2,000 workers that have organized since 2015. In the face of a consolidating industry increasingly run by hedge funds and private equity firms, workers are demanding fair pay, job security, and the preservation of
quality journalism.

These workers are organizing with The NewsGuild, a sector of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a dynamic, member-led union that is building a movement for social and economic justice. TNG-CWA seeks a highly experienced and motivated campaign lead to serve as a lead organizer on campaigns at media companies around the country. To apply, click here. Citing ‘overwhelming majority’ support, Arizona Republic Guild seeks voluntary recognition from Gannett, files for election with NLRB

Lambda Legal staff wins first contract

Aug. 26, 2019 – Lambda Legal’s staff union announced the ratification of its first contract and issued the following statement:

Crosscut Workers Vote Unanimously to Unionize

July 31, 2019 – Newsroom employees at Crosscut and KCTS 9, part of Cascade Public Media in Seattle, voted 16-0 to unionize with the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild, Local 37082 of The NewsGuild-CWA.

Finally! BuzzFeed News Union wins voluntary recognition

July 24, 2019 – More than five months after announcing their union drive, the journalists of BuzzFeed News officially won recognition of their union, the NewsGuild of New York has announced. A neutral party verified that a majority of staffers elected to be represented by The NewsGuild-CWA after reviewing cards signed by more than 90 percent of eligible employees.
