NEW YORK – U.S employees of EFE, Spain’s public news agency, asked Spain’s Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, to intervene to help stop what they say is abusive intimidation of staff after they protested a management decision to walk away from decade-old policy of promoting staff from within.

Journalist Town Hall on Authoritarianism & Defending the Free Press

Journalists rarely make themselves the story. Our job is to report what’s happening in our communities, interview sources, verify facts and hold power to account so the public can make informed decisions. But on Tuesday night, journalists from across the United States did something unusual: they told their own stories.

The national town hall, “Journalists Tell Their Own Stories: Authoritarianism and the Free Press,” brought together reporters, editors and media workers to speak directly about the rise of authoritarianism in the United States and the growing attacks on press freedom.

Chicago News Guild sues ICE over attacks on journalists at Broadview protests

Chicago NewsGuild joins federal lawsuit to stop ICE and DHS agents from targeting reporters at Broadview protests. The Guild release the following statement:

Guild members each day do the hard and sometimes dangerous work of reporting the news in our region. The past few weeks, the repeated clashes between protestors and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the ICE facility in Broadview has been one of the top headlines, and our members are the ones doing the reporting.

Spotlight PA journalists ratify first contract

Journalists at the nonprofit newsroom Spotlight PA ratified their first collective bargaining agreement, winning solid minimums, a 3% annual increase each year, a $750 ratification bonus, a grievance and arbitration policy, protections like just cause, guaranteed retirement contributions and a lot more.

Journalists at Bangor Daily News ratify first contract

BANGOR, Maine — After three days of voting, 89 percent of BDN Union members unanimously voted to accept the terms of their first two-year contract. The union’s Bargaining Committee reached a tentative agreement with Bangor Daily News Management on Oct. 2.

California journalists vote to approve contract with Alden Global Capital

Journalists across 11 Southern California newsrooms have voted to ratify a contract proposal after authorizing a strike.

NATIONAL —  The Southern California News Group Guild announced today its members have voted to approve their first contract, with 93% voting in favor of ratification. The agreement comes on the heels of the Guild’s strike authorization vote in September.

At Least 128 Journalists and Media Workers Killed in Israel-Gaza War

At least 128 journalists and media workers have been killed in the Israel-Gaza War since the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). All but five of those killed were Palestinian. Four journalists and media workers were Israeli and one was Lebanese. More than 41,000 other Palestinians have also been killed, according to Reuters. The majority of those victims identified by Palestinian health authorities are women and children.
