NewsGuild joins press freedom groups seeking attorneys’ fees in FOIL case
Nov. 15, 2019 – The NewsGuild-CWA has joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, the Society of Professional Journalists and a coalition of more than 20 media organizations supporting a New York newspaper’s fight for attorneys’ fees after a state agency failed to promptly release documents in response to a Freedom of Information Law request. Guild joins groups opposing expansion of Intelligence Identities Act
Aug. 9, 2019 – The NewsGuild-CWA joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and three dozen other organizations in signing a letter to members of Congress urging them to oppose the dramatic expansion of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982, one of the few laws that criminalizes the publication of truthful information about government activities. Guild joins press freedom groups in FOIA brief
Aug. 7, 2019 – The NewsGuild-CWA joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and two dozen other organizations filing a “friend of the court” brief in the case of Amadis v. Department of State, a federal Freedom of Information Act case on appeal to the DC Circuit. The case presents the first opportunity for the DC Circuit to address FOIA’s new “foreseeable harm” standard, which was added as part of the FOIA Improvement Act of 2016. NewsGuild joins Reporters Committee and others to argue for revisions to EPA’s proposed FOIA policy
July 22, 2019 – The NewsGuild-CWA has joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and a coalition of more than three dozen media organizations in opposing proposed changes to the EPA’s Freedom of Information Act regulations. In a July 9 letter, the coalition urged the Environmental Protection Agency to suspend implementation of the rule and to provide a public comment period of no fewer than 60 days. NewsGuild joins press freedom groups in ‘friend of the court’ brief
April 29, 2019 – The NewsGuild-CWA joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and 31 other media organizations in filing an amicus brief in Gubarev v. BuzzFeed, a defamation action before the 11th Circuit.

Calling on you to take action to protect journalists and a free press
Nov. 9, 2018 – A reporter suspended from White House press briefings because he asks tough questions. A journalist murdered in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey. Pipe bombs sent to more than a dozen targets, including journalists and other workers at CNN. As these aggressive acts against the press continue in the United States and abroad, the leader of the free world blames the media.
We at The NewsGuild-CWA – a union of media workers in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada – are horrified by the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a Saudi Arabian consulate and the pipe bombs sent to CNN. We also denounce the exclusion of CNN’s Jim Acosta from White House news conferences and the administration’s use of a doctored video to justify that decision.
