Washingtonian staffers: We’re joining together to form a union.

Workers at Washingtonian magazine announced June 23 that they are forming a union.

“For the past 56 years, Washingtonian has been a vital authority on the DC region,” they said in a statement. “We, the Washingtonian staff, have been deeply committed to that mission throughout the pandemic, publishing essential updates about COVID-19, covering protests in the streets, and producing the website’s most-read stories ever—all while continuing to create the monthly print magazine that our readers have counted on for decades.

NY Guild files labor charges against NY Times; launches petition campaign

NEW YORK – The NewsGuild of New York has filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board over union busting actions by Times management aimed at derailing a union organizing campaign among its tech staffers.

The last few weeks have been marred by serious attacks on democracy, press freedom and journalists at home and abroad.

We’re outraged by the Belarusian government’s use of a military aircraft to ground a civilian plane and arrest a journalist who was a passenger on the flight and by the Israeli government’s intentional bombing of offices housing the Associated Press and Al Jazeera. We’re also deeply disturbed by the arrest of an American journalist in Myanmar and the ongoing crackdown on the press there since a February coup. These brazen incidents reflect a troubling slide toward authoritarianism around the world.

Atlantic Digital Producers are unionizing

New York – Digital producers on Gannett’s Atlantic Digital Optimization Team (DOT) have formed a union with the NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003 to advocate for themselves, their profession and the communities they serve. These employees work across a five-state region that comprises 37 websites in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.

Staffers at Forbes announce they’re forming a union

Journalists at Forbes announced their intention to unionize with The NewsGuild’s New York Local on Tuesday, with more than 80% of eligible staffers signed on to the campaign. They are asking management to “respect their collective voice” and recognize their union voluntarily.
