The New Yorker has been a vital force in American journalism for nearly a century. Its deeply reported, clear-eyed, and principled stories have consistently challenged power and exposed injustices and abuses in communities of all kinds. We, the editorial staff of The New Yorker, are very proud of this legacy, and of our place in it. But we believe that the publication must work harder for its employees; the values that run through its pages should be better reflected in the culture of its workplace. Washington, DC – Unions representing 30,000 reporters, photographers, and broadcast employees are praising a bill filed in the Senate by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) on Friday that would make it a federal crime to assault a journalist. A similar bill was introduced in the House by Rep. Eric Swalwell of California in February. Emilio Gutierrez Wins New Hearing on Request for Asylum

May 24, 2018 – Mexican journalist Emilio Gutiérrez has won a new hearing on his request for asylum in the U.S., press freedom organizations have reported. The U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) ordered the new hearing, saying a judge must to consider additional evidence supporting the request. CWA Canada Steps Up Fight for Press Freedom

May 22, 2018 – CWA Canada is stepping up its efforts to protect press freedom in response to a spate of government intrusions on news organizations.

The union is part of a coalition challenging a “production order” issued by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and upheld by the Ontario Court of Appeal that requires VICE reporter Ben Makuch to hand over all communication between him and an alleged terrorist. The coalition, which has been granted “intervenor status” in the case, includes Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Index on Censorship and the Committee to Protect Journalists. Newsroom Staff at Lee Enterprises’ Southern Illinoisan
Votes Unanimously to Unionize, Join NewsGuild-CWA

 

CARBONDALE, Illinois — Newsroom employees of The Southern Illinoisan voted unanimously Thursday to form a union.

The 12-0 vote means the staff of 12 eligible employees will be represented by the United Media Guild, an affiliate of the NewsGuild-CWA, as the staff bargains for its first labor contract with the newspaper’s owner, Lee Enterprises. Rebellion Builds at Alden-Owned Newspapers

May 9, 2018 – The journalists of the Denver Post and other newspapers owned by Alden Global Capital have had enough. They’re in open rebellion against the “vulture capitalist” hedge fund – and the uprising shows no sign of abating.

On May 8, reporters, photographers and other newsroom personnel from Denver, St. Paul, the Bay Area, suburban Philadelphia, and Kingston, NY, converged on the sidewalks outside its New York City headquarters, where they picketed, chanted and gave speeches on bullhorns.
