Tech Workers Rally for the Right to Unionize

March 2, 2018 – Tech workers aren’t taking attacks on their right to organize a union lying down.

Software engineers rallied outside the San Francisco offices of Lanetix on March 2 to protest the company’s decision to fire all its tech employees after the workers announced plans to form a unit of The NewsGuild-CWA. The National Labor Relations Act prohibits employers from retaliating against employees who engage in union organizing.

“We explicitly demanded they recognize our right to organize in December. They knew we were organizing a union,” Bjorn Westergard told SF Weekly.

The protest was organized by the Tech Workers Coalition, with support from Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The Guild has filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board.

Guild Member Sues St. Louis, Police for Assault During On-the-Job Arrest

Feb. 26, 2018 – NewsGuild member Michael Faulk has filed a lawsuit against the city of St. Louis and nearly a dozen members of its Metropolitan Police Department, charging the officers assaulted him when he and approximately 120 others were arrested at a protest Faulk was covering for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Sept. 17, 2017. LANDSLIDE! L.A. Times Workers Vote Overwhelmingly for Union

Feb. 23, 2018 – Newsroom employees at the Los Angeles Times voted 248-44 to join The NewsGuild-CWA in January, ending 136 years of unfettered rule by management.
