Journalists and media unions in Australia, the US, Canada and the UK have issued the following joint call for governments to take “bolder steps” to protect jobs and save journalism.

Workers at HuffPost Canada and Huffpost Quebec filed for union certification with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) on Tuesday after a majority of staffers signed cards showing support for joining CWA Canada, which is part of The NewsGuild-CWA.

Employees of the Missouri ACLU announced Wednesday that they are forming a union as part of The NewsGuild-CWA and asked management of the organization to voluntarily recognize ACLU MO United. They will become part of the United Media Guild Local 36047.

Yesterday, Marylanders got some great news: a local investor wants to buy The Baltimore Sun and other Maryland newspapers owned by Tribune Publishing. Other communities with Tribune papers got bad news: the vampire hedge fund Alden Global Capital wants to take over the rest of the company.

Journalists of The Desert Sun voted overwhelmingly in favor of unionizing as part of The NewsGuild-CWA on Wednesday, in mail-in balloting that was supervised by the National Labor Relations Board. They will join the Media Guild of the West local.

Alden Global Capital, the New York hedge fund known for draconian cost-cutting at newspapers in its MNG Enterprises chain, has reached a deal with board members at Tribune Publishing to acquire the publicly traded company and take it private.

Editorial employees at three Gannett publications are standing together to fight for local news and address long-standing newsroom issues.
Journalists at three Gannett-owned New Jersey publications — the Bergen Record, the Daily Record and the NJ Herald — announced that they are unionizing with the NewsGuild of New York local on Wednesday. With nearly 90% of eligible staffers signed on, the Record Guild has requested voluntary recognition from management.

Employees at the progressive news site Daily Kos announced the creation of the Daily Kos Guild on Monday, saying the organization’s management had agreed to voluntarily recognize their union. They will join the Pacific Media Workers Guild local of The NewsGuild-CWA.
