Tech workers at the New York Times are going to have their ballots counted this week! The 600-person bargaining unit will be the largest group of workers to unionize with the Guild in decades. And it will become the largest group of tech workers with collective bargaining rights in the United States. It’s only happening because of the workers themselves, the support of the NewsGuild of New York, CODE-CWA and thousands of you — NewsGuild members. I’ll be heading to NYC this week to join the workers and plan to celebrate! Follow along with the workers on Twitter.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

There’s been a lot of Guild news over the last two weeks, so I’m just going to jump in.

A federal judge approved a settlement last week that prohibits Minnesota State Patrol from attacking or arresting journalists and awards $825,000 to several journalists who were assaulted while covering protests over the police killings of George Floyd and Daunte Wright in 2020.

You’ve waited a long time, and now NewsGuild swag is here. The Guild store opened last week with coveted union-made bomber jackets, hoodies, T-shirt and pins. They all bear the Guild’s new unblinking eye logo, which symbolizes the watchdog role journalists and activists play in protecting our democracy and holding power to account.

We’ll be adding more items in the coming weeks, including a non-leather jacket and coffee mugs. Check out the store and tell me what else you’d like to see!

But the numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Last week I joined members and leaders in a rally in front of the New York Times. We came to deliver a message: Stop union busting and respect our union.

It was a brisk day, but I was thrilled to see so many NewsGuild of New York members from several different newsrooms show up in support! There were three groups of workers from the New York Times there fighting for respect: Wirecutter, the NYT Tech Guild and the NYT Guild.

Remembering NewsGuild members lost in the last two years

Editor’s Note: The proceedings of The NewsGuild’s 2021 Sector Conference included the tribute below to Guild members who have passed away.

Today we remember and honor TNG-CWA members we have lost since the 2019 Sector Conference. We are eternally thankful for their advocacy for workers’ rights and dedication to their craft.
