The NewsGuild-CWA condemns the Israeli government’s attack on media organizations in Gaza in the strongest possible terms. The intentional bombing of offices housing the Associated Press and Al Jazeera was a blatant attack on press freedom that was clearly intended to prevent independent reporting on the government’s actions. It violates international law.

MinnPost Union won voluntary recognition on Thursday, after they “marched on the boss” during an online staff meeting. The reporters, support staff and business staff of the nonprofit news organization will join Minnesota Local 37002.

Residents and local organizations served by Tribune Publishing newspapers have a message for the company’s shareholders: vote NO to a proposed takeover by Alden Global Capital.
With shareholders set to vote May 21 on a $17.25 per share bid by the New York hedge fund, dozens of prominent individuals, local unions and community organizations served notice to Trib Pub shareholders that their actions could have profound impacts on millions of stakeholders, posting a letter to shareholders on the Securities & Exchange Commission’s EDGAR database.

Staffers at The Appeal had quite an eventful 24 hours: about 5 minutes after they notified management on May 10 that they were forming The Appeal Union, the CEO announced layoffs affecting approximately one third of the unit.
Workers denounced the move as retaliatory and illegal. Maxwell Tani chronicled the saga in the Daily Beast and journalism focused newsletters picked up the story.

An arbitrator rescinded the layoff of 17 faculty members at Point Park University on May 6, ruling in favor of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh, Local 38061, which represents approximately 130 full-time faculty members at the university.
Workers at The Appeal announced Monday that they are unionizing as part of The NewsGuild-CWA, just hours after journalists at The Kansas City Star announced a union drive.

Journalists of the The Kansas City Star took a major step Monday toward forming the Kansas City News Guild. Members of the union organizing committee presented local management with the request for voluntary recognition after a majority of eligible staffers signed cards signaling their support.

Journalists at three Gannett-owned New Jersey publications — the Bergen Record, the Daily Record and the NJ Herald — voted 59 to 4 Friday in favor of unionizing with The NewsGuild-CWA. They will be part of the NewsGuild of New York Local.

The NewsGuild-CWA sent a second letter to the top shareholders of Tribune Publishing on May 6, which points out that Tribune’s earnings suggest that the company has been sufficiently profitable that it need not be purchased. (The Guild posted the letter on the SEC website as well.)
The letter also links to a May 6 Washington Post article that casts aspersions on the ability of Alden Global Capital to come up with the cash to buy the company.
