Sheila Lindsay Steps Down, Nominations Open for Region 2 VP

Sept. 27, 2019 – NewsGuild Region 2 Vice President Sheila Lindsay stepped down from the Executive Council Sept. 20, following her resignation from employment with the American Nurses Association.

“The Executive Council joins the Guild membership in thanking Sheila for her dedicated and thoughtful service as a vice president of the national union, as president of her local and as a diligent representative of her home unit,” Executive Vice President Marian Needham wrote in a memo to local officers.

In accordance with the Guild Constitution, Region 2 locals may nominate members to fill the vacant position, Needham announced. Job Opening at NewsGuild: Organizing Campaign Lead

Sept. 23, 2019 – Media employees at print and digital publications around the country are organizing in record numbers. Journalists at outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, New Yorker, and BuzzFeed are among the more than 2,000 workers that have organized since 2015. In the face of a consolidating industry increasingly run by hedge funds and private equity firms, workers are demanding fair pay, job security, and the preservation of
quality journalism.

These workers are organizing with The NewsGuild, a sector of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a dynamic, member-led union that is building a movement for social and economic justice. Citing ‘overwhelming majority’ support, Arizona Republic Guild seeks voluntary recognition from Gannett, files for election with NLRB

Arizona Republic Newsroom Staff Announce Plan to Unionize

PHOENIX — The Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom of The Arizona Republic officially announced Wednesday its journalists are taking steps to unionize the state’s paper of record to have a seat at the table as a major corporate merger looms.

Reporters, photographers, producers, columnists, copy editors and other employees have signed union authorization cards stating their desire to be voluntarily recognized or hold an election to join The NewsGuild-CWA.

Executive Council Responses to Candidate’s Election Questions

Aug. 16, 2019 – The Sector Election and Referendum Committee referred to the Executive Council three questions posed by a candidate regarding eligibility to vote in the Guild’s pending presidential election. The Executive Council takes up these questions as an exercise of the responsibility assigned to it under Article IX, Section 9 of the Guild Constitution.

These questions and the EC’s answers may assist other members in understanding the voting requirements, so this exchange is offered to help members fully understand their dues obligations with regard to enfranchisement in the re-run election. Election Committee Orders Re-run of Election for NewsGuild President

Aug. 12, 2019 – The Sector Election and Referendum Committee of The NewsGuild-CWA has voted to order a re-run of the election for TNG President. The committee’s decision and the schedule for the new election can be read here. The SERC directs locals to take all appropriate steps to communicate this decision and election schedule to Guild members.

Updated Aug. 9, 2018 – The Second Circuit denied a pending petition for rehearing  filed by Ghislaine Maxwell in the case of Giuffre v.
