Workers at NY Times, NBC digital defy management’s return-to-office push

Nearly 1,300 employees of the New York Times vowed to work from home this week, in defiance of management “expectations” that they would return to the office. Management notified workers that they were expected to return to the office at least three days per week, beginning on Monday, Sept. 12.

On Tuesday, the Times employees were joined by more than 200 members of the NBC Guild.

Everett journalists vote unanimously: Union

The journalists of the Everett Herald voted unanimously on Thursday to form the Everett NewsGuild.

“Today the newsroom workers at @EverettHerald voted 19-0 to unionize. We will now have a true say in our working conditions,” they tweeted immediately after the vote count.

Members of Washington state Guild ratify first contract

Members of the Washington State NewsGuild voted 27-0 to ratify their first collective bargaining agreement with McClatchy last week. The agreement covers journalists at four publications: the Bellingham Herald, Tri-City Herald, Tacoma News Tribune and Olympian. They are members of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild.

Grist Union wins voluntary recognition

Workers at Grist received voluntary recognition of the Grist Union on Thursday after a neutral third party confirmed that more than 90 percent of employees had signed union cards indicating their desire to organize. They will become part of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild Local 37082. Grist is a nonprofit independent media organization dedicated to telling stories about climate solutions and a just future.

Staffers of Justice at Work are unionizing

Update – Feb. 3, 2022 – Members of the Justice at Work Staff Union announced on Feb. 2 that they had won voluntary recognition of their union.

Staff members of Justice at Work Pennsylvania, a legal aid nonprofit that supports low-wage workers, announced Thursday that they are unionizing with The NewsGuild. They will become part of The NewsGuild of Greater Philadelphia Local 38010.

Crosscut workers ratify first contract

Members of the Crosscut Union, representing workers at Crosscut and KCTS9, nonprofit news outlets based in the Northwest, voted overwhelmingly to ratify their first contract with Cascade Public Media on Nov. 30.

“This contract – and the hard work it took us to get here – is something to be immensely proud of,” union members said.

Boston Globe staffers protest owner Linda Henry at event honoring ‘women news leaders’

Members of the Boston Newspaper Guild upped the ante in their fight for a fair contract on Monday, protesting Globe owner Linda Pizzuti Henry outside a panel honoring “women news leaders.” The panel was sponsored by radio station WBUR, an NPR affiliate, and also featured feminist icon Gloria Steinem.

NYT Guild Tech Walkout: Let them vote!

After months of unlawful union-busting tactics by management of the New York Times, members of NYT Guild Tech staged a virtual walkout on Wednesday. Workers said they were protesting management’s continued unfair labor practices that seek to divide their union and prevent hundreds of workers from voting in an upcoming National Labor Relations Board vote on union representation.
