Proposed Apollo/TEGNA transaction raises serious questions

Recent reports about the proposed acquisition of U.S. broadcaster TEGNA, Inc. raise serious legal and policy questions that the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice will have to address.

First, is this deal going to result in further erosion of local journalism?

Danielle Newsome

We’ve got two new staffers! I’m thrilled to announce them after a lot of work to make it happen. Danielle Newsome (she/her) joins us as a new staff representative, with a focus on the jobs that used to be part of the Guild’s director of collective bargaining. This comes after all of our discussions last year to increase capacity and provide more support to our locals. And while CWA still has a hiring freeze, this position was created after the passage of the SMART resolution at CWA’s October Convention.

Tech workers at the New York Times are going to have their ballots counted this week! The 600-person bargaining unit will be the largest group of workers to unionize with the Guild in decades. And it will become the largest group of tech workers with collective bargaining rights in the United States. It’s only happening because of the workers themselves, the support of the NewsGuild of New York, CODE-CWA and thousands of you — NewsGuild members. I’ll be heading to NYC this week to join the workers and plan to celebrate! Follow along with the workers on Twitter.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

There’s been a lot of Guild news over the last two weeks, so I’m just going to jump in.

A federal judge approved a settlement last week that prohibits Minnesota State Patrol from attacking or arresting journalists and awards $825,000 to several journalists who were assaulted while covering protests over the police killings of George Floyd and Daunte Wright in 2020.

Happy New Year!

2021 was a bang-up year for NewsGuild union organizing. Journalists, staffers at nonprofits and employees of publishing houses stood up in record numbers and demanded a voice at work. In all, 2,128 new Guild members won union recognition at 42 new workplaces last year.

But the numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Former Guild staffer Kathy Mulvey Brennan dies

NewsGuild leaders were saddened to learn of the passing of Kathy Mulvey Brennan, who died today after a brief illness.

Kathy came to work for the Guild in 1997, after serving as a staffer at both the American Federation of Government Employees and the Office and Professional Employees International Union. She retired as the director of contract administration and previously was the office manager and Guild coordinator. She was predeceased by her husband, Bob Brennan, who was also a staffer of the Communications Workers of America.

We’re hiring an organizer!

Media employees at print and digital publications around the country are organizing in record numbers. Journalists at outlets such as Politico, New York Daily News, Dallas Morning News, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, New Yorker, and BuzzFeed are among the more than 6,000 workers that have organized since 2015. In the face of a consolidating industry increasingly run by hedge funds and private equity firms, workers are demanding fair pay, job security and the preservation of quality journalism.

These workers are organizing with The NewsGuild, a sector of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a dynamic, member-led union that is building a movement for social and economic justice. TNG-CWA seeks a highly experienced and motivated campaign lead to serve as a lead organizer on campaigns at media companies around the country.
