Unionized staff at ProPublica vote to strike

The NewsGuild of New York-represented workers at the nonprofit newsroom take action after management’s persistent refusal to agree to a fair contract that includes industry-standard “just cause” job security protections and guardrails around the use of AI.

NEW YORK – Unionized staff at one of the nation’s largest nonprofit newsrooms, ProPublica, have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. Workers have been bargaining for more than two years for a first contract.

Newsletter: We’ve been on strike for 3 years.

Three years ago tomorrow the journalists of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh went on an unfair labor practice strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. While they withheld their labor at the paper, they kept telling stories in the Pittsburgh Union Progress. To mark three years on strike, they’re asking each other to share their thoughts about their fight for a fair contract. I wanted to run two profiles in full, which were originally published in the PUP. Other news from around our union follows below.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Loses Final Appeal, Must Restore Health Care to Striking Workers

PITTSBURGH – On Tuesday the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals rejected two attempts by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PG) to evade its obligation to provide editorial workers the health care plan it illegally tore away from members of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh (TNG-CWA Local 38061) in 2020.

Striking Journalists Maintain Digital Picket Lines with Solidarity from Readers and Former Colleagues

PITTSBURGH – Today, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union announced that striking production and advertising workers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PG) have accepted a buyout offer after the newspaper outsourced production of its print edition to the Butler Eagle, eliminating 31 union jobs in Allegheny County. Journalists and newsroom staff represented by the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh (TNG-CWA Local 38061) remain on strike.

Newsletter: Election Day Strike at the New York Times

Yesterday, I joined our picket line at the New York Times in the largest tech worker strike in U.S. history. The energy was extremely high, culminating in a rally at 1 p.m. in front of the Times. We’ve got 675 colleagues in the New York Times Tech unit, which unionized in March 2022 and has been fighting for a first contract ever since.
