Study shows Gannett underpays women and journalists of color as much as $27,000

More than two dozen Gannett journalists share personal testimonials in the report.

A first-of-its-kind pay equity study of 14 Gannett newsrooms by NewsGuild members sheds light on stark pay disparities for women and journalists of color and a workforce whiter than the communities they cover.

The study of nearly 450 employees also shows that unions make a difference. Unionized newsrooms with pay scales in their contracts had significantly smaller gender and racial pay gaps than newly organized units with no contracts yet in place.

NewsGuild President Schleuss to tell lawmakers: ‘The crisis in local news is a crisis of democracy.’

NewsGuild-CWA President Jon Schleuss will tell a House subcommittee on Friday that local news is facing “an extinction-level” threat that jeopardizes American democracy. 

In his planned testimony, he will urge the committee to adopt legislation to stop the unprecedented, dangerous decline.

New Jersey Media Unites and Unionizes

Editorial employees at three Gannett publications are standing together to fight for local news and address long-standing newsroom issues.  

Journalists at three Gannett-owned New Jersey publications — the Bergen Record, the Daily Record and the NJ Herald — announced that they are unionizing with the NewsGuild of New York local on Wednesday. With nearly 90% of eligible staffers signed on, the Record Guild has requested voluntary recognition from management.

Alden’s Randall Smith needs to apologize for supporting Trump

Earlier today, I wrote to Randall D. Smith, a Tribune director and the principal of Alden Global Capital,  urging him to condemn the recent assault on the U.S. Capitol by the supporters of President Donald J. Trump. I also called on him to denounce the president for inciting that assault, to condemn the attack on journalists perpetuated by the rioters and the president; and to apologize for his financial support of Trump.
