WASHINGTON – The workers of Chemical & Engineering News, the independent magazine of the American Chemical Society, have announced the formation of the Chemical & Engineering News Guild. The majority of Chemical & Engineering News’ union-eligible staffers have signed cards indicating their desire to form a collective bargaining unit and become part of the Washington Baltimore News Guild, The NewsGuild-CWA. The guild is seeking voluntary recognition from the American Chemical Society, CE&N’s parent employer.

Avodah nonprofit workers ratify first union contract

Workers at Avodah, a national Jewish social justice organization, have ratified their first union contract with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, securing major wins for equity, stability and worker power.

Avodah develops Jewish leaders for social justice through the Jewish Service Corps, the Justice Fellowship, and other community-based programs across the country. Now, with this first contract, the staff empowering that mission has won strong, enforceable protections that ensure fairness and respect in the workplace.

WASHINGTON – Journalists at The Hill, represented by the Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild, have voted 46-1 to ratify their first collective bargaining agreement with Nexstar Media Group, Inc., securing increases in pay, vacation time and family leave.

Guild members at Radio Free Asia advocated on Capitol Hill for Congress to work with President Trump to fully restore Radio Free Asia (RFA), which was effectively shut down earlier this year following sweeping cuts to the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). The closure has left dozens of journalists without jobs and has silenced a critical voice for press freedom abroad.

CIEL Unite staff union wins voluntary recognition

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) management has voluntarily recognized CIEL Unite, the CIEL staff union that represents workers across the United States and Switzerland. The recognition comes after a supermajority of CIEL workers announced their intent to unionize in partnership with the Washington Baltimore News Guild (WBNG) in February.

I’m heading to Pittsburgh next week for our strikers’ day in court. After 28 months on strike the National Labor Relations Board is pushing for an injunction against the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for violating U.S. labor law. Our case will be heard on Wednesday afternoon in the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals after winding through the NLRB’s process.
