Post-Gazette loses 3rd Circuit appeal request, owes workers restored terms, money

PITTSBURGH — On Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals denied the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s request to have every judge on the circuit reconsider a November 2025 ruling from a panel of the same court that enforced a National Labor Relations Board order directing the PG to restore the entire collective bargaining agreement that it illegally tore up in July 2020. That includes restoration of paid time off, banked sick days, some workers’ wages, health care and the right to arbitrate discipline, among other issues.

PG to Shut Down 240-Year-Old Paper After SCOTUS Slaps Down Company’s Bid to Evade Court Order

PITTSBURGH — After years of wasting millions of dollars losing court battles in attempts to deny their workers’ basic rights, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PG) announced on Wednesday afternoon that it would be closing on May 3.

Earlier in the day, the U.S. Supreme Court denied the company’s request to stay a U.S. 3rd Circuit Court order requiring the PG to reinstate a contractual health care plan it had previously agreed to prior to illegally tearing it up in 2020.

Today marks an emotional and long-awaited milestone for the labor movement in Pittsburgh. Post-Gazette journalists have officially returned to the newsroom after more than three years on strike.

Newsletter: Pittsburgh strikers win big!

Last week our strikers in Pittsburgh won big! They received an incredible decision by a three-judge panel at the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals. The judges ordered the company repeal more than five years of worker rights violations and to compensate the workers impacted by violations of federal law.

Newsletter: We’ve been on strike for 3 years.

Three years ago tomorrow the journalists of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh went on an unfair labor practice strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. While they withheld their labor at the paper, they kept telling stories in the Pittsburgh Union Progress. To mark three years on strike, they’re asking each other to share their thoughts about their fight for a fair contract. I wanted to run two profiles in full, which were originally published in the PUP. Other news from around our union follows below.

Post-Gazette Lawyer Argues Against PG Reporting — and facts — in Bizarre 3rd Circuit Court Appearance

Newsletter: Boss faces contempt charges.

In five days, we’ll be in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette management will be on the defendant’s side of the courtroom. 

After 32 months on strike the company is facing two major issues: an enforcement order from the National Labor Relations Board and contempt charges from the NLRB for the company’s failure to follow a rare 10(e) injunction we won in March.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is facing the prospect of daily, compounding fines over its refusal to comply with a U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals order to restore the health insurance plan that it illegally took away from workers in 2020.

Newsletter: Two legal victories, one powerful May Day.

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals denied two motions by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Tuesday that would’ve delayed a rare injunction our members won after 30 months on strike. The ruling from the court lets stand an injunction that requires the company to restore pre-2020 health care coverage, bargain in good faith and submit updates on the status of bargaining to the National Labor Relations Board.
