The newsroom staff of the Times-Union in Jacksonville, Florida has announced it is unionizing with the help of The NewsGuild-CWA. They are proud of their product, but are demanding that management acknowledge the role they play in creating award-winning journalism. They also have stated that having a union contract will force their owners, GateHouse Media, to deal directly with their employees. CARBONDALE, Illinois — Newsroom employees of The Southern Illinoisan voted unanimously Thursday to form a union.
The 12-0 vote means the staff of 12 eligible employees will be represented by the United Media Guild, an affiliate of the NewsGuild-CWA, as the staff bargains for its first labor contract with the newspaper’s owner, Lee Enterprises. April 24, 2018 – Journalists at the Chicago Tribune have amassed support from 85 percent of newsroom employees for their efforts to form a unit of The NewsGuild-CWA, organizers announced Tuesday.
They asked Editor-in-Chief and Publisher Bruce Dold to voluntarily recognize the union and said they would submit signed union cards to the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday to schedule a vote on the matter if he refused or failed to respond to their request.
