PHOENIX — Today, the journalists of The Arizona Republic voted to unionize with the NewsGuild-CWA. The vote was 64 to 30 out of a bargaining unit of 101 people.
After one of the most aggressive anti-union campaigns in recent memory in the media industry, an overwhelming majority of the newsroom chose to unite to protect benefits, improve working conditions and win a seat at the table. Oct. 10, 2019 – The NewsGuild-CWA is takings its campaign to “Preserve Local News” to readers on Thursday as it distributes flyers outside more than 50 GateHouse newspapers across 14 states.
The flyers decry GateHouse Media’s aggressive program of layoffs and cost-cutting as the company prepares for a potential merger with the Gannett Corp. GateHouse says there will be up to $300 million in additional cuts and “synergies” following the merger. Oct. 9, 2019 – The Providence Newspaper Guild, a local of The NewsGuild-CWA, is looking for an administrator to work with union members at six locations in New England. The administrator will answer questions about contract rights, file grievances, prepare arbitration cases to enforce members’ rights, and prepare for contract negotiations. The position involves working with members, conducting bargaining surveys, drafting proposals and working with the bargaining committee. It also entails working community and political action centers to advocate for our members. Sept. 30, 2019 – Journalists at The Columbian newspaper have announced plans to unionize as The Columbian Guild.
An overwhelming majority of reporters, photographers, copy editors, designers and editorial assistants have signed cards indicating their support for the effort. The Columbian Guild will join the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild – Local 37082 of The NewsGuild, a sector of the Communications Workers of America.
