Our detained member’s son was at the State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. last night. Rep. Ilhan Omar from Minnesota invited Gerardo Orozco Guzman, the son of Eustaquio “Paco” Orozco Verdusco, our member who was detained by U.S. immigration officers in January. Paco’s family is raising money to support the legal fees, daily expenses, support for his family to travel to visit him in detention in New Mexico and ongoing care for the family. The state of New York opened applications for tax credits supporting journalism jobs on Tuesday. The state was the first in the United States to pass a journalism jobs tax credit in 2024. The Albany Newspaper Guild (TNG-CWA Local 31034) successfully pushed for the legislation alongside support from other New York locals and the Communications Workers of America.

WASHINGTON — The NewsGuild-CWA joined a class action lawsuit with the ACLU of Minnesota, Status Coup News, longtime Minneapolis residents and others to uphold the rights of the Minnesotans and journalists who have been obstructed and targeted by the federal government for exercising their First Amendment rights. The suit is supported by pro bono partners Ciresi Conlin, Forsgren Fisher, and Riach Law.

NEW YORK – Unionized editorial staff at Fortune have won their first contract for both digital and print employees, a deal that lifts wages a total of 11% for the life of the deal, sets new salary standards, provides job security protections, and more.
The 10 reporters that make up the Bucks County Courier Times and Intelligencer voted Thursday to unionize with the NewsGuild of Greater Philadelphia in a resounding 8—1 vote.
In a newsroom where over half of reporters work second jobs and no reporters under 40 can afford to leave family homes, workers look forward to negotiating with management — which has acknowledged the low wages— in order to live and raise families in the communities we serve.

The NewsGuild-CWA is sponsoring a digital security training with the Freedom of the Press Foundation at 2pm ET February, 26. The training will last about 90 minutes and cover steps journalists can take to protect their devices, their sources and their materials from hackers or other organizations trying to surveil the work of journalists and media workers.
