NYT Tech Workers Celebrate Blowout Win in Historic Union Election

80% of workers vote for union representation, capping hard-fought campaign

Times Tech Guild is now officially the largest union of tech workers with bargaining rights in the country

The National Labor Relations Board today announced that, in a 404-88 blowout vote, New York Times tech workers had won their election for a union, after a year-long campaign that was met with aggressive union-busting tactics from management. 85% of the unit voted in the election.

Update: Solidarity with striking members of GMG Union!

Update March 7, 2022: GMG Union announced March 6 that they had reached a tentative agreement with G/O Media Management.

March 3, 2022: The NewsGuild-CWA sent a message of solidarity to the striking workers at Gizmodo, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku, Lifehacker and The Root, who are members of GMG Union and the Writers Guild of America (East).

Tech workers at the New York Times are going to have their ballots counted this week! The 600-person bargaining unit will be the largest group of workers to unionize with the Guild in decades. And it will become the largest group of tech workers with collective bargaining rights in the United States. It’s only happening because of the workers themselves, the support of the NewsGuild of New York, CODE-CWA and thousands of you — NewsGuild members. Workers at ECU are unionizing

Update: March 9, 2022: Members of End Citizens United Staff Union won voluntary recognition from management of the nonprofit organization on March 8. They are part of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild Local 32035.

Workers at End Citizens United/Let America Vote announced Friday that they are unionizing. The organization’s core mission is to ensure that everyone has a voice and the freedom to participate in our democracy.

Grist Union wins voluntary recognition

Workers at Grist received voluntary recognition of the Grist Union on Thursday after a neutral third party confirmed that more than 90 percent of employees had signed union cards indicating their desire to organize. They will become part of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild Local 37082. Grist is a nonprofit independent media organization dedicated to telling stories about climate solutions and a just future.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

There’s been a lot of Guild news over the last two weeks, so I’m just going to jump in.

A federal judge approved a settlement last week that prohibits Minnesota State Patrol from attacking or arresting journalists and awards $825,000 to several journalists who were assaulted while covering protests over the police killings of George Floyd and Daunte Wright in 2020.
