Journalists at four Washington state papers: We’re unionizing
Update: Workers at four Washington state newspapers won voluntary recognition of their union, the Washington State News Guild, on Feb. 25.
“The recognition comes following Wednesday’s decision from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) supporting the formation of all four newsrooms, The News Tribune in Tacoma, The Olympian, The Bellingham Herald, and the Tri-City Herald, into one union,” the unit wrote.

No place for harassment in our union
As the president of our union, I’m responsible for improving our culture and eliminating barriers that make it difficult for survivors of harassment to come forward. I do not equivocate when I say as a member-led democratic union we have zero tolerance for harassment in any form and that must be woven into the fabric of all that we do.
But it’s clear that — even with a steadfast commitment to create and maintain a safe workplace — our policies and our own culture must improve.

It’s official! Verso workers win union recognition
It’s official! The workers of Verso Books have won voluntary union recognition from management of the publishing house after an arbitrator certified on Dec. 8 that a majority of employees in the unit had signed cards indicating support for joining the Washington-Baltimore Local of The NewsGuild-CWA. Management had agreed in principle to grant voluntary recognition late last month.

Betsy Wade, a NewsGuild icon, passes away at 91
Betsy Wade, a NewsGuild icon, passed away on Thursday. She was 91 years old.
Wade was the first woman president of the NewsGuild of New York, the first woman to edit news copy for the New York Times, and she was the lead plaintiff in a groundbreaking sex discrimination complaint filed against the paper in 1974.

Staffers at four iconic publications seek union recognition from Meredith Corp
Staffers at four renowned media brands – Entertainment Weekly, Martha Stewart Living, Shape Magazine and PeopleTV – announced on Thursday that they are forming a union.
They are seeking to join their Guild-represented colleagues at PEOPLE magazine, and have asked the Meredith Corporation, which owns the publications, to voluntarily recognize them as a single bargaining unit of The NewsGuild of New York local.
