NewsGuild members are marching for Labor/Labour day!

NewsGuild members across North America will be celebrating Labor/Labour Day this coming Monday. Parades in Pittsburgh and Toronto will include strikers at the Post-Gazette and TVO, the Ontario public broadcaster. 

Monday, Sept. 4

Buffalo
The Buffalo NewsGuild, which includes members at the Buffalo News, will line up at Dorrance and McKinley at 11 a.m. The parade will begin at 12 p.m. A cookout will immediately follow the parade at Cazenovia Park. These folks work at the Buffalo News. 

Central Florida
The Florida Guild and CWA folks will have a picnic at 11 a.m. at Lake Eola Park in Orlando. Sponsored by the Central Florida AFL-CIO. CWA Local 3108, which includes members at the Bradenton Herald, Jacksonville Florida Times Union, Lakeland Ledger, Miami Herald, el Nuevo Herald, Miami New Times, Naples Daily News, Fort Myers News-Press, Orlando Sentinel, Palm Beach Post and Daily News and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Detroit
After a three year break for the pandemic, Detroit’s Labor Day Parade will return at 9 a.m. on Sept. 4. Members of the Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, Detroit Observer & Eccentric, SEIU Healthcare Michigan, Rising Voices AFF, We The People and others will join the route which starts at Michigan Avenue and Sixth Street heading west. 

Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette strikers are marching with CWA and Teamsters members in the parade hosted by the Allegheny-Fayette County Labor Council. One of the largest Labor Day parades in the U.S., strikers and supporters will meet at Crawford Street and Centre Avenue in the arena parking lots. NewsGuild President Jon Schleuss and Executive Vice President Marian Needham will join the our strikers along with supporters. 

Toledo
The Toledo NewsGuild, with members at the Toledo Blade, will march in the city’s parade at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 4. The Blade is owned by the Block family, which has repeatedly broken the law in the strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The parade will start on Summit Street at Monroe and head north. 

Toronto
Canadian Media Guild members, TNG-CWA Local 30213, will march in Toronto’s Labour Day Parade, gathering at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 4. CMG members include the strikers at TVO, the Ontario public broadcaster, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canadian Press and many more. Members get free entrance into the Canadian National Exhibition or “Ex”, which has attractions, exhibits, rides and performances. Meet up at the corner of University Avenue and Dundas Street West (look for the CMG logo). Read more here.

Saturday, Sept. 9

New York 
IAPE, News Media Guild and the NewsGuild of New York will join the CWA District 1 group marching in New York City’s Labor Day Parade which happens the Saturday following Labor Day on Sept. 9. The locals represent workers at the Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Reuters, New York Times, Amsterdam News, Insider, Condé Nast and many, many other outlets. Meet at 10 a.m. for the 11:30 a.m. march at 45th Street & 6th Avenue in Manhattan.
