Betsy Wade, a NewsGuild icon, passes away at 91

Betsy Wade, a NewsGuild icon, passed away on Thursday. She was 91 years old.

Wade was the first woman president of the NewsGuild of New York, the first woman to edit news copy for the New York Times, and she was the lead plaintiff in a groundbreaking sex discrimination complaint filed against the paper in 1974.

Staffers at four iconic publications seek union recognition from Meredith Corp

Staffers at four renowned media brands – Entertainment Weekly, Martha Stewart Living, Shape Magazine and PeopleTVannounced on Thursday that they are forming a union.

They are seeking to join their Guild-represented colleagues at PEOPLE magazine, and have asked the Meredith Corporation, which owns the publications, to voluntarily recognize them as a single bargaining unit of The NewsGuild of New York local.

Journalists of L.A. Times win a decisive victory for pay equity

Nov. 12, 2020 – The journalists of the Los Angeles Times have won a victory for pay equity: Owners of the Times and Tribune Publishing agreed to pay $3 million to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging that women and journalists of color were paid less than their white male counterparts. The settlement was announced Tuesday.

Training: Trauma Awareness and Self Care

Oct. 28, 2020 – The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, will deliver a 75-minute training on trauma awareness and self care at 7 p.m. ET on Nov. 9. The event is sponsored by the NewsGuild of New York and is open to all NewsGuild-CWA members. The training will be led by Bruce Shapiro, the Dart Center’s executive director, an investigative journalist and an expert on occupational health of journalists. Workers of Color Of Change win voluntary union recognition
