Wall Street vultures are circling local news again and this time it’s at TEGNA, a local news broadcaster that operates 66 stations in 54 communities. Standard General and Apollo Global Management are attempting a takeover of the company and it will almost certainly mean fewer local news journalists and higher costs for consumers.

Gannett Regional Union members score big wins

Workers at a dozen Gannett-owned news outlets in the Atlantic region have racked up some impressive wins recently. The Gannett Regional Union, which reported the victories, includes the Atlantic DOT Guild (Atlantic Digital Optimization Team), APP-MCJ Guild (Asbury Park Press, Courier News and Home News Tribune), Hudson Valley News Guild (The Journal News, Poughkeepsie Journal and Times Herald-Record), The Record Guild (The Record, Daily Record and New Jersey Herald), Newspaper Guild of Rochester and Utica News Guild.

Guild calls on Biden to stop TEGNA merger and save journalism jobs

NewsGuild President Jon Schleuss today called on President Biden to urge the Federal Communications Commission to reject the attempt to takeover TEGNA, one of the largest local broadcasting television groups, by Wall Street funds Apollo Global Management and Standard General.

Journalists at 4 Washington state publications reach tentative agreement on a first contract

The bargaining committee of the Washington State NewsGuild reached a tentative agreement with management on a first contract on May 26. The agreement will cover journalists at four McClatchy-owned publications: the Bellingham Herald, Tri-City Herald, Tacoma News Tribune and Olympian.

Public News Service Union wins recognition

The journalists of the Public News Service won voluntary recognition of their union on Tuesday.

“We’re thrilled that management @PNS_News has voluntarily recognized our union,” members of the Public News Service Union said in a tweet. “We look forward to negotiating our first contract and working with management to create a sustainable and equitable future for PNS.”

Great news! Journalists at The Hill announced last week that they are unionizing! A supermajority of the roughly 80 reporters, designers, copy editors, producers and social media curators have signed cards in support of the effort. They will join the Washington-Baltimore News Guild Local 32035.
