Nov. 3, 2017 – Statement by NewsGuild-CWA President Bernie Lunzer on the Closure of Gothamist and DNAInfo:

Word that billionaire owner Joe Ricketts closed news sites Gothamist and DNAInfo one week after workers voted to unionize is alarming and outrageous. Unions add quality and sustainability, which also translates into profitability. Retaliating against employees seeking a voice at work is wrong and illegal. We stand with all workers who form and join unions to improve their lives, their work and their organizations.

 

CWA Calls on FCC to Investigate Harmful Corporate Sales Practices in Telecom Industry

Oct. 17, 2017 – The Communications Workers of America called on the Federal Communications Commission to more fully investigate the causes of unethical sale practices that result in cramming and slamming – a serious problem across the telecommunications industry. This is a critical step in developing effective consumer protections that apply to all voice communications providers, whether traditional landline, interconnected VoIP or wireless, CWA said.

Guild Joins Challenge to Gag Orders on Gov’t Requests for Info

Oct. 17, 2017 – The NewsGuild-CWA joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and other organizations in filing a friend-of-the-court brief challenging the constitutionality of the national security letter (NSL) statute, which grants the FBI the power to demand customer records from electronic communication service providers and impose gag orders banning providers from disclosing any details of the NSLs they receive.

Notable Threats to Press Freedom

Sept. 20, 2017 – Among the most notable threats to press freedom during the week of Sept. 11-17: Journalists were detained during weekend protests in St. Louis and the White House called for an ESPN reporter to be fired after she posted tweets calling President Trump a white supremacist.
