The first time union members at the New York Times attended a bargaining session in big numbers, the company freaked, said Davey Alba, a bargaining committee member who is a technology reporter at the Times. “Management refused to speak for 30 minutes and made a big show of being insulted that we brought all these people.”
But that just piqued workers’ interest.

Hannah Jo Rayl always believed that those who had the least deserved a little bit more. During her long and storied career as an international representative for The Newspaper Guild (now The NewsGuild) and later as executive director of the Northeast Ohio Newspaper Guild, Rayl combined keen intelligence, unlimited energy and a righteous moral center to improve the lives of those she represented.
Rayl, of Hartville, Ohio, died Jan. 27, six days after her 85th birthday. She is survived by her brother, Paul, and sisters Ruth and Joyce, as well as generations of media workers she mentored, befriended and represented. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

On Wednesday the Senate heard testimony on legislation that would exempt media companies from antitrust laws and allow them to collectively negotiate for advertising revenue lost to Google and Facebook.
The NewsGuild praises the bipartisan coalition in Congress that is deeply concerned about the current state of local news in America, but wants to make sure that any legislation is focused on supporting and increasing local news jobs.

May 12, 2022 Update: Staffers at the Financial Times US bureaus won recognition of the FT US Guild on Wednesday, tweeting, “We’ve officially been recognized by @FT management!”
Jan. 31, 2022 – Staffers at the Financial Times US bureaus are forming a union, becoming the latest group of workers to join the surge in organizing among media employees. They will join the News Media Guild, which also represents employees of the Associated Press, Guardian US and others.

An election to formalize the union of 600 New York Times tech workers began Monday as the National Labor Relations Board mailed ballots to eligible employees. It is a historic milestone in a campaign where workers have fought for recognition since first announcing that they had formed a union last April. Ballots will be counted between February 28 and March 7.

Update – Feb. 3, 2022 – Members of the Justice at Work Staff Union announced on Feb. 2 that they had won voluntary recognition of their union.
Staff members of Justice at Work Pennsylvania, a legal aid nonprofit that supports low-wage workers, announced Thursday that they are unionizing with The NewsGuild. They will become part of The NewsGuild of Greater Philadelphia Local 38010.

NEW YORK — Sports Illustrated Union, which represents 94 workers across the sports publication, voted unanimously to ratify their first contract with Sports Illustrated management and The Arena Group on Jan. 20. The deal was finalized on Dec. 31, 2021.
