The Washington-Baltimore News Guild stands in solidarity with our members at the Southern Poverty Law Center as the organization faces a federal indictment rooted in politics rather than the law. To characterize the SPLC’s use of confidential informants as fraud, at a moment when this administration has made no secret of its hostility toward the SPLC, raises serious questions about the integrity and motivation of this prosecution.

The Venetoulis Institute has acquired the Pulitzer Prize-winning PG staff to keep the paper alive. It has also indicated it will cut jobs.
PITTSBURGH — Post-Gazette workers were informed on Tuesday morning that the publication was sold to the Venetoulis Institute, the owners of the Baltimore Banner.
We are excited for this historic institution to survive, and eager to ensure that it operates in a way that respects the people of Pittsburgh, and the journalists who strive to serve them.
Banner leadership has already publicly indicated that it intends to cut jobs and not uphold our union contract.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said journalists, protestors and legal observers are likely to succeed on their First Amendment claims against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for retaliatory use of force during ongoing protests against federal immigration actions in Southern California.
The NewsGuild-CWA joined a lawsuit in June against DHS and then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem filed by the ACLU of Southern California with the Los Angeles Press Club, journalists, legal observers and others.

The NewsGuild of New York-represented workers at the nonprofit newsroom take action after management’s persistent refusal to agree to a fair contract that includes industry-standard “just cause” job security protections and guardrails around the use of AI.
NEW YORK – Unionized staff at one of the nation’s largest nonprofit newsrooms, ProPublica, have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. Workers have been bargaining for more than two years for a first contract.

Workers at CBS are walking out. The unionized team that runs CBS’ streaming service launched a 24-hour strike in New York and San Francisco after negotiations with CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss reportedly imploded. Despite multiple days of good-faith negotiations and a strike pledge signed by 95% of members, management continues to offer worse terms than in previous contracts.
