We’re hiring a comms coordinator

The NewsGuild (TNG-CWA), a sector of the Communications Workers of America, is hiring a Communications Coordinator to organize and oversee the internal and external communications for the largest union of journalists and media workers in North America. TNG-CWA also represents workers in nonprofits, publishing, interpretation and labor unions. The position is currently open and the application deadline is May 22, 2026.

Salary Range: $80,312.20 – $134,652.19 / year
Job Location: Washington, D.C.

This is a full-time position for a Communications Coordinator and based in Washington, D.C. The coordinator will work under the direction of The NewsGuild-CWA president and will serve as the principal media strategist. They’ll coordinate communications with journalists, monitor social media accounts, oversee the operation of newsguild.org, write and edit posts, produce and distribute press releases, oversee distribution of bi-weekly newsletter to members and supporters, provide support to TNG-CWA locals, amplify campaigns among bargaining units, provide comms training and oversee internal messaging systems. Additionally the coordinator will provide support during strikes, pickets and other collective actions, such as shooting photographs or video.

The ideal candidate will be self-directed and motivated to support other union staffers, local leaders and coordinate with the Communications Workers of America, responding to time-sensitive deadlines.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement media and communications strategy for The NewsGuild-CWA;
  • Facilitate member-led communications strategy and media training for Guild leaders, staff and members for interviews and public appearances;
  • Draft press releases, media advisories, op-eds, talking points and bi-weekly newsletters for the Guild;
  • Maintain and update newsguild.org and other campaign websites as necessary;
  • Manage and develop content for the Guild’s social media accounts;
  • Work closely with organizing, bargaining, legislative and outreach departments on public facing communications strategy;
  • Maintain relationships with international, national and local journalists; 
  • Pitch stories on Guild activities to media outlets;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in a communications role, preferably for a news organization, labor union or allied advocacy organization;
  • Strong writing, copy-editing and research skills;
  • Demonstrated successful track record of social media engagement, developing communications strategies across various media;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Experience overseeing or supporting video;
  • Experience working directly with a large team and several leaders;
  • Demonstrated passion for and experience with the labor movement;
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace;
  • Experience with web publishing tools;
  • Excellent time-management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple projects;
  • Experience developing social media campaigns and work plans;
  • Experience translating legislation or union resources into digestible messaging for a broad audience;
  • Ability to accept and apply feedback and constructive criticism; 
  • Willingness to travel and work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required.

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Experience as a union member;
  • Communications, journalism or experience in a related field;
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations or newsrooms and journalism organizations;
  • Proficient in Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop or other related software;
  • Knowledge of social media analytics, Google Analytics;
  • Existing press relationships;
  • Experience with WordPress or other website content management systems;
  • Proficiency in languages besides English;
  • Experience with photography and videography.

Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this job is $80,312.20 – $134,652.19 per year depending on skills and experience, and the position comes with substantial benefits. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Federation of Guild Representatives.
