BETHESDA, Md. — The unionized 50-member staff of Education Week, a national nonprofit news organization, voted overwhelmingly in December to ratify its first collective bargaining agreement with management, joining a growing list of nonprofit media organizations nationwide with strong union contracts.

Science News Media Guild ratifies first contract, securing major gains in pay and leave

WASHINGTON – 85 percent of the 27 members in the Science News Media Guild, workers who publish Science News and Science News Explores, have voted to ratify their first collective bargaining agreement. The historic contract establishes increases in pay, including cost of living raises and equity raises, sick and parental leave and importantly, codifes just-cause protections.

WASHINGTON – The workers of Chemical & Engineering News, the independent magazine of the American Chemical Society, have announced the formation of the Chemical & Engineering News Guild. The majority of Chemical & Engineering News’ union-eligible staffers have signed cards indicating their desire to form a collective bargaining unit and become part of the Washington Baltimore News Guild, The NewsGuild-CWA. The guild is seeking voluntary recognition from the American Chemical Society, CE&N’s parent employer.

WASHINGTON — Unionized journalists at POLITICO and E&E News (PEN Guild) announced today a major victory in their arbitration case against POLITICO management over the company’s unilateral introduction of artificial intelligence tools that bypassed negotiated safeguards and undermined core journalistic standards.

In a detailed decision, the arbitrator found POLITICO violated the collective bargaining agreement when it launched two AI-driven products — a “Live Summaries” feature used during the 2024 Democratic National Convention and Vice Presidential Debate, and the Capitol AI Report-Builder tool for POLITICO Pro subscribers — without providing required notice, bargaining, or human oversight, as required by the contract.
