The NewsGuild-CWA and the Washington-Baltimore News Guild are hiring a comms director.

Job Title/Position: Communications Coordinator
Salary Range: $80.932.66 – $103,073.27
Job Location: Washington, DC

This is a full-time position for a Communications Coordinator, based in  Washington D.C. The Communications Coordinator  will work with both  The NewsGuild-CWA and the Washington-Baltimore News Guild as the principal media strategist. They will help manage earned media, online media, internal, and external communications. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, and be able to respond to time-sensitive communications and deadlines.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement media and communications strategy for The NewsGuild-CWA and WBNG;
  • Serve as the formal spokesperson and media liaison for The NewsGuild-CWA and WBNG;
  • Draft press releases, media advisories, op-eds, talking points and weekly newsletters for The NewsGuild-CWA and WBNG;
  • Maintain and update the newsguild.org and wbng.org websites;
  • Manage and develop content for the NewsGuild and WBNG social media accounts;
  • Work closely with organizing, bargaining and legislative & outreach departments on public facing communications strategy;
  • Maintain relationships with national and local journalists; 
  • Pitch stories on Guild activities to national and local media outlets, including print, digital, radio and television;
  • Facilitate member-led communications strategy and media training for TNG-CWA and WBNG leadership, staff and members for interviews and public appearances;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in a communications role, preferably for a labor union or allied advocacy organization;
  • Strong writing, copy-editing, and research skills;
  • Demonstrated successful track record of social media engagement, developing communications strategies across various media;
  • Strong social media skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Experience overseeing or supporting video;
  • Experience working directly with a large team and several leaders;
  • Demonstrated passion for and experience with the labor movement;
  • Proficient in Google Suite and/or Office365;
  • Experience with web publishing tools;
  • Excellent time-management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple projects, and experience in developing social media campaigns and work plans; self-starter
  • Experience translating legislation or union resources into digestible materials/messaging for a broad audience;
  • Ability to accept and apply feedback and constructive criticism; 
  • Willingness to travel and work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required.

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Experience as a member of a union;
  • Communications, journalism, or experience in a related field;
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations or newsrooms and journalism organizations;
  • Proficient in Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop, or other related software;
  • Knowledge of social media analytics, SEO, etc.;
  • Existing press relationships;
  • Experience with WordPress or other website content management systems ;
  • Proficiency in languages besides English;
  • Experience with photography and creating/editing videos.

Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this job is $80.932.66 – $103,073.27 per year depending on skills and experience, and the position comes with substantial benefits. This position is covered by a current collective bargaining agreement with the WBNG Staff Union that includes the opportunity for at least 10 telework days per month.
