Salt Lake Tribune Journalists Unionize

Journalists at Utah’s Salt Lake Tribune announced they are forming a union to ensure The Tribune remains Utah’s independent voice.

In a mission statement announcing the union, the Salt Lake News Guild, journalists note that ensuring a workplace with fair wages and working conditions will allow workers a voice in the future of their nonprofit newsroom.

“We believe The Tribune’s own mission is bolstered by a represented workforce, pioneering labor standards, equitable pay, adherence to the ethics of journalism and transparency imparted to employees and readers. We seek a seat at the table where decisions are made and a role in guiding our nonprofit journey.

The Salt Lake News Guild looks forward to working with Tribune management to forge our shared path toward a sustainable future.”

The Salt Lake News Guild sent a letter to Lauren Gustus, Salt Lake Tribune management and the board of directors, demanding voluntary recognition no later than Friday, July 19, 2024.

“Unionizing the workforce aligns with The Tribune’s nonprofit mission,” the letter reads. “It reinforces our shared commitment to democracy, transparency and accountability. It helps create a strong foundation as we navigate an ever-changing media environment.”
