Providence Local Seeks Administrator

Oct. 9, 2019 – The Providence Newspaper Guild, a local of The NewsGuild-CWA, is looking for an administrator to work with union members at six locations in New England. The administrator will answer questions about contract rights, file grievances, prepare arbitration cases to enforce members’ rights, and prepare for contract negotiations. The position involves working with members, conducting bargaining surveys, drafting proposals and working with the bargaining committee. It also entails working community and political action centers to advocate for our members. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work in a team environment.

The Providence Newspaper Guild is one of the oldest Locals representing journalists, advertising, circulation and press room employees in New England. PNG is a local of The News Guild in Washington DC. TNG is affiliated with the Communication Workers of America. The News Guild has a long and successful history of advocating for employees of Newspapers and news delivering sources. With all the changes occurring in the news industry this is a challenging and exciting time to advocate to ensure that the voices of employees are heard as we strive to improve how the news can be delivered.

Administrator

Job Description:
The Administrator is a “hands-on” individual who works daily with our membership in our six locations in New England. This position answers questions about contract rights. The Administrator also files grievances and does preparation for arbitration to enforce our contract rights. In addition, this position prepares for negotiations through working with the membership, doing bargaining surveys, creating proposals and working with the bargaining committee. Community and political action centers around advocating for our members. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work in a team environment.

Responsibilities:

  • organizing our membership into action through contract negotiation processes, contract enforcement and community and political activities, as well as quality improvement work
  • internal organizing and running meetings
  • representing our membership through grievances and arbitration
  • bargaining assistance on behalf of our membership
  • working with our membership to train and develop rank and file leaders
  • all aspects of membership development
  • establishing and maintaining a departmental representative/steward structure at each unit
  • timely communications with our membership (write leaflets and newsletters) and site visits covering all shifts
  • maintaining union membership, visibility and activity
  • participate in community, political and union events

Qualifications:
Experience as a Representative of the Newspaper Guild preferred, including leadership as an officer in a Local; proven ability to carry on the responsibilities of the job; effective written and communication skills; ability to listen actively and frame issues; ability to assess information and evidence and deal with conflicting/changing priorities; ability to think strategically and exercise a high level of judgment; willingness to work long and irregular hours and participate in all union wide activities; computer literate.

Experience:
At least two (2) years’ experience required in representing/organizing workers, preferably in the newspaper industry.

Note:
This position may work on contract campaigns, new external organizing and/or any of the above depending on the needs of The Providence Newspaper Guild.

Evening and weekend work will be involved. You must be a self-starter with the ability to work under supervision. Driver’s license, auto and insurance required.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary commensurate with experience. Excellent full benefit package includes partial employer paid self and dependent medical and dental, as well as employer SEP IRA contribution.
