Employees of Miami New Times win union recognition

Aug. 31, 2020 – Journalists at the alt-weekly Miami New Times voted 3-0 to unionize on Aug. 13, capping an eight-month fight for workers’ rights. They bring a four-person unit into CWA Local 3108 in Florida.

The group held together in the face of management-instigated legal delays and staff and pay cuts brought on by the pandemic. They join their colleagues at sister publication Phoenix New Times, which won a union vote in June.

The Voice Media Guild organizing committee first announced its intention to form a union at the two publications on Jan. 21. Voice Media Group, New Times’ parent company, refused to voluntarily recognize the union and contested the inclusion of 70 percent of eligible voters in the union. Management’s anti-union tactics resulted in multi-day hearings, but union members prevailed on every challenge.
