On Wednesday, April 19, the staff of the Private Equity Stakeholder Project announced the formation of a union within the Denver Newspaper Guild (TNG-CWA Local 37074), part of Communications Workers of America – District 7 (CWA). The PESP Staff Union (PESP-SU) is now seeking voluntary recognition from the nonprofit organization.

The 11 employees represent all aspects of PESP’s work activities, supporting nationally-recognized research and campaigns to pull back the curtain on the scope and negative effects of the private equity industry. With the formation of this union, PESP staff look to join the movement of other mission-driven nonprofit organizations that recognize the importance and solidarity of unionized workplaces. Through collective bargaining, these nonprofits, including PESP, can commit to fair and equitable working conditions for employees, while also enhancing the services they provide to marginalized communities across the country.

The PESP-SU will only seek to bolster the successful work PESP has done since its inception six years ago, and the PESP staff know that this union will benefit all involved with the organization—including staff, leadership, and stakeholders.

The Private Equity Stakeholder Project has a well-documented history of supporting and strengthening labor unions across the country. The formation of this union within the organization itself is a natural step to demonstrate solidarity among the burgeoning labor movement in multiple industries. The PESP staff seek to be an example of the incredible benefits and accomplishments that are possible when workers come together and bargain collectively.

Much of the leadership at PESP come from labor union backgrounds, so the value of unionization already permeates the mission and the vision of the organization. PESP staff are excited about solidifying this new partnership with the organization, and they are optimistic that PESP leadership will welcome the new union with open arms. This union will strengthen the relationships within PESP, and provide positive avenues for support and collaboration for years to come. PESP will only continue to grow as a preeminent nonprofit engaging with the communities affected by the private equity industry.

About the PESP Staff Union
We at the Private Equity Stakeholder Project Staff Union advocate for workers, tenants, patients, those criminalized by legal systems, and the lands on which we live in hopes of bringing about a more just world. As we strive to hold some of the most powerful entities accountable, we turn inward to reflect on how our organization may reproduce pieces of the very same systems we hope to change.
