On Wednesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said journalists, protestors and legal observers are likely to succeed on their First Amendment claims against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for retaliatory use of force during ongoing protests against federal immigration actions in Southern California.
The NewsGuild-CWA joined a lawsuit in June against DHS and then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem filed by the ACLU of Southern California with the Los Angeles Press Club, journalists, legal observers and others.

The NewsGuild of New York-represented workers at the nonprofit newsroom take action after management’s persistent refusal to agree to a fair contract that includes industry-standard “just cause” job security protections and guardrails around the use of AI.
NEW YORK – Unionized staff at one of the nation’s largest nonprofit newsrooms, ProPublica, have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. Workers have been bargaining for more than two years for a first contract.

Workers at CBS are walking out. The unionized team that runs CBS’ streaming service launched a 24-hour strike in New York and San Francisco after negotiations with CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss reportedly imploded. Despite multiple days of good-faith negotiations and a strike pledge signed by 95% of members, management continues to offer worse terms than in previous contracts.

WASHINGTON– The members of AAJCollective walked out of work today and are officially on strike until midnight.
After 1.5 years of bargaining, workers are still fighting for a first contract that guarantees fair wages. Management has failed to meet demands for equitable pay and has proposed language that would cap annual salary increases at 3%, with most employees receiving raises of less than 2.5% per year.

Our members at The New York Times Guild are currently bargaining their next collective agreement. What happens in these negotiations will impact the rest of the news industry.
On Wednesday, hundreds of workers at the Times, represented by The NewsGuild of New York, took part in an action flooding management’s inbox with emails outlining five major priorities in their contract fight. A big priority on that list: artificial intelligence, which is a critical issue in several newsrooms, from ProPublica to the 50 unionized newsrooms at Gannett (aka USA Today Co.).
