Former Guild staffer Kathy Mulvey Brennan dies

NewsGuild leaders were saddened to learn of the passing of Kathy Mulvey Brennan, who died today after a brief illness.

Kathy came to work for the Guild in 1997, after serving as a staffer at both the American Federation of Government Employees and the Office and Professional Employees International Union. She retired as the director of contract administration and previously was the office manager and Guild coordinator. She was predeceased by her husband, Bob Brennan, who was also a staffer of the Communications Workers of America.

We’re hiring an organizer!

Media employees at print and digital publications around the country are organizing in record numbers. Journalists at outlets such as Politico, New York Daily News, Dallas Morning News, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, New Yorker, and BuzzFeed are among the more than 6,000 workers that have organized since 2015. In the face of a consolidating industry increasingly run by hedge funds and private equity firms, workers are demanding fair pay, job security and the preservation of quality journalism.

These workers are organizing with The NewsGuild, a sector of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a dynamic, member-led union that is building a movement for social and economic justice. TNG-CWA seeks a highly experienced and motivated campaign lead to serve as a lead organizer on campaigns at media companies around the country.

We’re hiring a staff rep/director of collective bargaining!

The NewsGuild-CWA represents about 25,000 journalists, media workers, non-profit staffers and activists in the United States and Canada. We’re a growing union — thousands of workers have joined our union in the past few years. NewsGuild members work at hundreds of news outlets—including big publications like the New York Times, small papers like the Casper Star Tribune and digital-only sites like Buzzfeed News. We’re also proud to represent interpreters and activists working at unions and nonprofits. The Guild is a sector of the Communications Workers of America.

First! We’ve got a couple job openings at the Guild international. The first is for a staff representative, who would play the role of director of collective bargaining. This position has been vacant since Melissa Nelson retired in 2018. This person would review contract language and be a clearinghouse for organizing the trends happening across the Guild’s collective bargaining program and keeping folks coordinated. It’ll be a huge asset to our locals, who have asked for more support.

NewsGuild denounces Alden’s continued bid to destroy local news

The union is calling on Lee’s board to reject Alden’s takeover bid.

The NewsGuild-CWA denounces the purchase offer made yesterday by Alden Global Capital for Lee Enterprises. If advanced, the deal would give Alden control of three of the four largest chains of newspapers in the United States. Such industry concentration would have a negative impact on consumers who depend on local news, employees who work for Lee papers and on our democracy.

Last week I joined members and leaders in a rally in front of the New York Times. We came to deliver a message: Stop union busting and respect our union.

It was a brisk day, but I was thrilled to see so many NewsGuild of New York members from several different newsrooms show up in support! There were three groups of workers from the New York Times there fighting for respect: Wirecutter, the NYT Tech Guild and the NYT Guild.

Staffers at Wirecutter are planning a walkout during Black Friday week if the company continues to slow-walk bargaining. The New York Times Co., which owns the product review site, has failed to provide necessary information to negotiate wages. At the same time, the Times is rolling in money: Wirecutter has added 10,000 paid subscribers and the company is sitting on about $1 billion in cash. The company sends union-busting attorneys to the table and has offered guaranteed annual raises of just 0.5%.

Did you notice the new logo at the top of this email? I unveiled the new design at our Sector Conference last week to rave reviews.

The design, which was selected by our Executive Council, is forward-looking while paying tribute to our proud history. Several features — the unblinking eye, protective shield, radiating lines — are adapted from logos we used decades ago. They symbolize the watchdog role and illuminating effect of journalists and media workers.
