At Least 128 Journalists and Media Workers Killed in Israel-Gaza War

At least 128 journalists and media workers have been killed in the Israel-Gaza War since the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). All but five of those killed were Palestinian. Four journalists and media workers were Israeli and one was Lebanese. More than 41,000 other Palestinians have also been killed, according to Reuters. The majority of those victims identified by Palestinian health authorities are women and children.

The International Federation of Journalists, the international organization representing hundreds of thousands of journalists from 187 trade unions and associations in more than 140 countries, has called for the release of all hostages, the opening of Gaza to international reporting and for Israel to respect international law that requires combatants to safeguard journalists. This period, from the start of the Israel-Gaza war to today, marks the deadliest time for journalists since the CPJ began tracking data in 1992.

The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate (PJS), our sibling union and IFJ affiliate, counts more than 150 journalists killed, more than 10% of Gaza’s journalists. PJS says about 200 others are severely wounded.

Now, more than ever, protecting journalists is critical.

The IFJ and The NewsGuild-CWA call on members to continue to stand with journalists in Gaza, Lebanon, the West Bank and Israel. NewsGuild-CWA members and others can share this graphic and donate to IFJ’s Safety Fund to support journalists covering the war while living in unbearable conditions.

“Journalists are the workers who shine a light in a dark world,” said NewsGuild-CWA President Jon Schleuss. “An attack on journalists anywhere is an attack on journalists everywhere. We must continue to stand with journalists in Gaza and the region who are the ones bringing us the truth during this war.”
