CHICAGO — The multi-award-winning newsroom staff at The TRiiBE is forming a union and seeking to become a part of the Chicago News Guild, TNG-CWA Local 34071, aligning with the nationwide labor movement to build a more sustainable, equitable and people-centered newsroom that serves Chicago’s Black communities.
Today, the majority of eligible TRiiBE staff across the editorial department signed cards and a mission statement showing their support in forming a union with the NewsGuild-CWA.
One Triibe United has requested the organization’s leadership voluntarily recognize the union and work with staff to negotiate its first-ever contract, but TRiiBE leadership has not yet done so. As a result, workers are seeking an election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board.
Support our cause by signing our petition and telling management to recognize us!
In its mission statement, One Triibe United has outlined the following organizing principles that are steering our efforts:
Respect
We want a work environment that fosters dignity, fairness and equality for all, where workers’ identities, skills, and talents are valued, and their worth and contributions are fully recognized. We want to build a culture where open, meaningful and productive conversations are encouraged without fear of retaliation. Also, we desire a workplace where we can hold management accountable when concerns or questions arise. We, as workers, want a voice in decisions that shape the company’s future.
Equity
Equity means that all roles are approached with the same care, rigor, and respect, regardless of gender, gender identity, or expression. Addressing sexism and queerphobia in the workplace should be guided by restorative principles that prioritize reflection, responsibility, and repair, centering the experiences of Black LGBTQ+ communities. Equity also requires recognizing that disabilities are varied and may shape how people engage in their work, and ensuring dignity, respect, and appropriate accommodations.
Transparency
Being open and honest about decisions that impact the company’s present and future.
Sustainability & Responsibility
We want to secure a stable future for The TRiiBE’s workers. We believe it’s essential for management to recognize the dynamics of our newsroom and adjust accordingly to prevent burnout and maintain staff well-being. We are seeking a work-life balance that recognizes we have lives and families outside of The TRiiBE and creates a space where our colleagues can see themselves working for years to come.
Solidarity
We are committed to building collective power. We model ethical, compassionate journalism rooted in community and liberation.
