Whereas Bruce Nelson spent more than three decades as an International Staff Representative with The NewsGuild-CWA following more than a decade as a journalist. 

Whereas Bruce found his niche with the Guild to use his inherent ability to connect with local and national union members and leaders, to bring out the best in them. 

Whereas Bruce taught and mentored many a Guild activist at various local bargaining tables; through contract enforcement of the grievance and arbitration process; through regional and national conferences; and at the Guild’s New Local Officers Seminar (NLOS).

Whereas Bruce’s deep love of collective bargaining, and the power of collective action, was represented in everything he did on behalf of the Guild and through his often-referenced mantra: “All We Have Is Each Other.”

Whereas Bruce viewed collective bargaining as an art, or a craft such as journalism, that he believed must be learned through instruction, which can be found at such institutions as the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR).

RESOLVED: The family of Bruce R. Nelson commits to funding a scholarship in the amount of $10,000.00 to be named The Bruce Nelson Collective Bargaining Scholarship. 

Said funds will be used to subsidize training for The NewsGuild-CWA leaders and activists on the subject of collective bargaining through the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). 

The framework of the scholarship will be designed and coordinated by Melissa Nelson, or her designee, in concert with The NewsGuild-CWA’s elected leaders and its legal counsel.
