Feb. 22, 2018 – Members of the New York Times unit of The NewsGuild of New York ratified a four-year contract in December that covers much of the newsroom and business staff.
Under the contract, members received a 2.5 percent signing bonus and a 2 percent raise in January, with additional 2 percent raises set for March 2018, 2019 and 2020.
The Guild won up to one year of guaranteed medical coverage for members who are laid off; negotiated short- and long-term disability plans; secured an accelerated vacation accrual schedule; and garnered an additional holiday and personal day. In addition, positions in the Video and Audio Departments were added to union jurisdiction.
“These past two years at the table have proven that union representation in the New York Times is necessary for our newsroom and for all of our staff,” said Bill Baker, the Times unit chair.
“Though we’ve negotiated and ratified our contract, our work doesn’t stop here.”
