Victory for Press Freedom and Workers: Court Grants Preliminary Injunction to Protect the U.S. Agency for Global Media

WASHINGTON—Today, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia granted a preliminary injunction in Widakuswara v. Lake, affirming the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) was unlawfully shuttered by the administration, Acting Director Victor Morales and Special Adviser Kari Lake. The decision enshrines that USAGM must fulfill its legally required functions and protects the editorial independence of Voice of America (VOA) journalists and other federal media professionals within the agency and newsrooms that receive grants from the agency, such as Radio Free Asia and others.

Hearst Connecticut (finally!) heads towards an election

After an eight-month wait, journalists at Hearst Connecticut won a ruling outlining their election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board. Workers first launched their union campaign in August. The ruling was delayed by understaffing at the NLRB, which has had an essentially flat budget for the last decade.

After workers launched their union, Hearst suggested that they were not one bargaining unit but instead should be divided into five separate units. Workers presented evidence at the hearing and heard from the NLRB what they already knew:

“… the employees’ virtually identical skills, duties, and working conditions; the complete functional integration of the proposed unit; and the consistent interchange between employees assigned to different teams and different locations establish that the petitioned-for unit is an appropriate unit.”

After more than two years of organizing, bargaining, and weathering multiple rounds of layoffs, the workers of Daily Kos have officially ratified their first collective bargaining agreement with the Pacific Media Workers Guild, Local 39521 of The NewsGuild-CWA.

Evansville journalists unanimously ratified first contract

The NewsGuild bargaining unit at the Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press has ratified its first contract, which will bring needed raises to all six people in the unit.

Pacific Northwest Guild testifies in support of Oregon that would fund news jobs

The president of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild testified in support of a bill advancing in Oregon that would require Big Tech platforms to compensate Oregon newsrooms for local content.

Mai Hoang, the president of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild, a local of The NewsGuild-CWA, testified in the Oregon State Senate Committee on Rules last week in support of Senate Bill 686, which would level the playing field and make sure large companies like Meta and Alphabet would have to pay for news appearing on their apps and websites such as Facebook, Instagram and Google.

CIEL Unite staff union wins voluntary recognition

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) management has voluntarily recognized CIEL Unite, the CIEL staff union that represents workers across the United States and Switzerland. The recognition comes after a supermajority of CIEL workers announced their intent to unionize in partnership with the Washington Baltimore News Guild (WBNG) in February.

Wisconsin Watch Union members this week voted unanimously to approve the contract.
