On February 24, 2017, journalists from BuzzFeed News, CNN, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and Politico were barred from entering the office of White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer for a scheduled press briefing. The White House said it only allowed in reporters from a handpicked group of news organizations that had been previously confirmed.

The NewsGuild-CWA considers these actions to be a calculated effort directed against news outlets the administration does not like, and a direct assault on freedom of the press.

The NewsGuild-CWA executive council passed the following resolution February 24, 2017:

“The NewsGuild-CWA condemns actions taken by White House staff that prohibited the New York Times, CNN and Politico from attending today’s press briefing. Certainly this was a calculated effort, and intended to send a message punishing news outlets that the administration does not like. One might expect this in a dictatorship but not in America where freedom of the press is a constitutional right. We call on all elected officials to state their dissatisfaction and for all citizens to directly contact the White House complaining about this affront to freedom.”
