Metro Caring workers win union election in landslide

The staff at Denver-based anti-hunger nonprofit, Metro Caring, won a landslide 15-2 union victory in their election last week. The win comes after a supermajority of workers signed union authorization cards last year and requested voluntary recognition from management.

Metro Caring is one of the oldest nonprofits in Denver. Last year, it celebrated its 50th anniversary. Staff celebrated this historic win in a social media statement.

“This is a historic moment for Metro Caring, and we are so grateful for your support throughout this process! We are already seeing how the union has empowered our members, and we are excited to head into bargaining to secure a contract that will benefit employees for years to come,” the workers said after unionizing.

“I’m incredibly proud to have been part of the Metro Caring Workers United team as we worked toward certification of our union with the NewsGuild-CWA,” said Lucor Jordan, member of the MCWU Bargaining Committee and founding member of the union.

“While I’ve never been part of a union before, throughout my working life I’ve received the benefit of the work that unions put in over past generations protecting workers and helping to provide a safe, dignified work environment,” he said. “I’m now proud to be part of a new chapter in the non-profit sector.”

Now, workers will begin bargaining their first contract. You can support them by following their social media, @mcworkersunited on Instagram, and responding to calls to action as they lean on supporters to secure their first contract.
