More than two years after their union was recognized, the Financial Times Guild won a tentative agreement with the Financial Times that will be put to a member vote.
Details of the contract will be released soon, but the union shared that the contract includes:
- Improved retirement benefits
- Increases in pay for the lowest-paid workers
- More time away from work for new parents
- Workplace protections critical to members
“Three years, nine months—from the first meeting where we pledged to form a union, to today,” Claire Bushey said about the agreement. Bushey is a Chicago-based reporter at the Financial Times. “I love the committee members past and present. I love our unit. I love our allies at @ftnuj , @ftsguild and @newsguild. We did it. Because … WHEN WE FIGHT, WE WIN!”
“Incredibly proud of our entire newsroom for securing this deal, especially our absolutely tireless bargaining committee and contract action team that made this all possible!” said Emily Goldberg, who works on Financial Times newsletters.
“THANK YOU to our incredible bargaining committee and every member who fought for better working conditions, the FT Guild posted today on X (formerly Twitter). “You’ve all made the FT’s US newsroom a better place to work.”
Workers at the Financial Times unionized in May 2022 with the News Media Guild, the NewsGuild-CWA local that also represents workers at the Associated Press, Guardian, Oxford University Press and others.
