Desert Sun settles strike, reaches first contract agreement

Unionized journalists at The Desert Sun, the Coachella Valley’s daily newspaper, have reached an agreement for a first contract. The tentative agreement comes two days after the 15 NewsGuild-CWA members at the Desert Sun launched a ULP strike — the 25th strike organized by NewsGuild members in 2024 so far — over the company’s refusal to offer consistent raises that reflect the skyrocketing cost of living in the valley, as well as its unwillingness to offer any protections against exorbitant health care cost hikes.

IGN Creators Guild win voluntary recognition, celebrate with Twitch stream

A supermajority of editorial and creative workers at IGN signed union cards and launched their campaign on February 6. Just two weeks later, Ziff Davis management voluntarily recognized them after more than 5,700 supporters signed a petition demanding recognition.

To celebrate, members of the IGN Creators Guild organizing committee will board the battle bus and join NewsGuild-CWA President Jon Schleuss for an evening of Fortnite and unions, discussing how they organized and what’s next now that they’ve won voluntary recognition. And we’ll bring it all home by answering your questions about unionization live.

Join the livestream on Monday, Feb. 26 at 8 PM ET at twitch.tv/newsguildcwa/ to celebrate their voluntary recognition and learn a little more about what unions can do for all of us in the tech, video game, and journalism industry!

Happy Friday!

We have a lot of news around the Guild, so let’s jump in.

Last week I attended the Washington Post RAT-ificiation party in Washington, DC and it broke my heart with joy. Outgoing co-unit chair Katie Mettler showed a video about leadership. Have you seen the shirtless dancing guy? A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. But followers are the ones that build a movement and you have to embrace them as equals.
