Jan. 5, 2018 – After 136 years in business, the Los Angeles Times saw its first union election on Jan. 4, with more than 200 employees voting. Ballots will be counted on Jan. 19, after approximately 45 employees who work offsite are given the opportunity to vote by mail.
Mail-in ballots must be received in the office of the National Labor Relations Board by the close of business on Jan. 18. The vote tally will begin on Jan. 19 at 10 a.m (PT).
L.A. Times reporters, copy editors and graphic artists tweeted selfies with pro-union messages throughout the day on Jan. 4, and words of support from readers, union members and other supporters arrived steadily.
“Thank you to everyone who sent a message of support today,” The NewsGuild-CWA Organizing Committee tweeted after the voting ended. “Sorry we couldn’t respond to all of them — they were coming in faster than we could answer!”
